Loup River Valley Tourism Coalition Participates in Kearney Expo.

 

The newly formed Loup River Valley Tourism Coalition joined in the fun Friday, May 11th and Saturday, May 12th by participating in the Nebraska Outdoors Expo, at the FirstTier Event Center in Kearney.

 

The Expo. featured 40 activities presented by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission personnel and volunteers from outdoor interest groups.  The indoor and outdoor activities were in the areas of archery, boating and canoeing, camping, dog training, fishing, fish and wildlife management, hunting, law enforcement, natural world encounters, shooting and trapping.  The Expo was open Friday from 3:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. and Saturday from 8:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.

 

The Loup River Valley Tourism Coalition formed through the Burwell Area/Garfield County CVB and Valley County Tourism committees worked together to have a booth at the Expo.  Volunteers from both communities worked together to promote the Calamus and Scenic Loup River Valley area.  The Escape Travel Guide was distributed at the show along with other area brochures.

New Travel Guide Distributed In 130 Eastern Nebraska Communities

 

A $5,000 grant awarded through the Nebraska Division of Travel and Tourism made it possible for the new ESCAPE to Calamus & Scenic Loup River Valley Travel Guide to be distributed to 5,000 subscribers of Nebraska Life Magazine.  Grant funding was used to subsidize the expenses incurred with direct mailing of the new area travel guide this past week into eastern Nebraska.

 

The travel guide was distributed into 130 eastern Nebraska communities along with the May/June issue of Nebraska Life Magazine.  Nebraska Life Magazine subscribers in the following 130 Nebraska communities received copies of the areas local travel guide; Adams, Alexandria, Alvo, Arlington, Ashland, Auburn, Avoca, Bancroft, Beatrice, Beaver Crossing, Bee, Bellevue, Benedict, Bennett, Bennington, Blair, Blue Springs, Bradshaw, Brock, Brownville, Bruning, Burchard, Cedar Bluffs, Ceresco, Colon, Cook, Cordova, Cortland, Craig, Crete, Davenport, Davy, Dawson, De Witt, Decatur, Denton, Deshler, Dorchester, Eagle, Elkhorn, Elmwood, Endicott, Exeter, Fairbury, Fairmont, Falls City, Firth, Fort Calhoun, Fremont, Friend, Garland, Geneva, Gresham, Gretna, Hebron, Henderson, Hermon, Hickman, Hooper, Humbolt, Jansen, Johnson, Kennard, LaVista, Lewiston, Lincoln, Linwood, Louisville, Lyons, Malcolm, Malmo, Martell, Mc Cool Junction, Mead, Milford, Milligan, Murdock, Murray, Nebraska City, Nehawka, Nickerson, Oakland, Odell, Omaha, Otoe, Palmyra, Papillion, Pawnee City, Pender. Chamber Announces Theme for Annual Rodeo Parade

 

On Monday, May 7th the Burwell Chamber of Commerce announced the theme for the 2007 Rodeo Parade: “Great American Hero’s”.  A total of 20 theme ideas were submitted from community members for this year’s parade.  Ty and Dylan Petersen two (2) young avid rodeo fans and parade participates submitted this years winning theme idea.  Ty and Dylan received $20 in Chamber Bucks from the Burwell Chamber of Commerce and 2 free tickets to this years rodeo from the Garfield County/Frontier Fair Association for submitting this years winning theme entry.

 

The date of this year’s parade is set for Saturday, July 28th. The Burwell Chamber of Commerce is looking forward to this years entries.  The annual parade is a wonderful opportunity for families, businesses, churches and local organizations to show their spirit for the Burwell community.

 

Currently the Burwell Chamber of Commerce is planning this year’s parade and seeking volunteers to assist with the event. Any individual, business or organizations willing to help with this year’s event is encouraged to contact the chamber office at (308) 346-5210.

Burwell Chamber May Day Winners Announced

 

Tuesday, May 1st was a special May Day for 2 local shoppers in the Burwell community.  Erma Lee and Rebecca SonDag were the winners of 2 fabulous May Day Baskets from the Burwell Chamber of Commerce and a number of its members.

 

This April, Burwell Chamber of Commerce members filled 2 May baskets full of goodies.  Gifts in the baskets included restaurant gift certificates, Chamber Bucks, a tanking trip for four (4), lotion, etc., among other fabulous prizes.

 

Local shoppers became eligible to win the May Day baskets by shopping in any one of the 20 participating businesses during the month of April.  Participating businesses included Antiques at the Burwell Butter Factory, Big Red Feeds, Burwell Family Practice, Burwell Floral & Bridal Loft, Burwell Insurance Agency, Burwell Pharmacy, Dry Creek Western Wear, Nebraska Central Telephone Company, Pathway Bank, The Pizza Palace, Sandstone Grill, Shurfine Food Center, Snyder Street Cottage, Spelts Lumber & Hardware, Subconn, TierOne Bank, Town & Country Insurance Agency, UNL Extension Office, the US Post Office, and The Wagner Bunkhouse.

 

The May Day gift baskets were a promotion sponsored by the Burwell Chamber of Commerce to encourage residents to shop at local businesses during the month of April.

Pinckney and Franzen presented the financial report ending March 31, 2007.  Motion made by Fryzek, seconded by Chaffin to approve the Financial Report ending March 31, 2007.  Motion carried.

Motion made by Vodehnal, seconded by Pinckney to approve the April 02, 2007 Claims in the amount of $532.01.  Motion carried.

Unfinished Business

Chamber Bucks Policy

Franzen presented information to the board of directors in regards to other chamber offices policy on cashing chamber bucks.  The standard policy across the State of Nebraska among other chamber offices is that chamber bucks are only redeemed by chamber business members.  A letter is typically sent to businesses that redeem chamber bucks asking them not to do so, since it is a benefit to being a chamber member.  The board asked the staff members to develop a sign for chamber members to display in their window notifying customers that they accept chamber bucks.

 

Location of 2007 Burwell Summer Fun Daze

Motion made by Fryzek, seconded by Vodehnal to support the location of the carnival at the south end of the square.  Motion carried.

 

2007 Rodeo Parade Theme

Dobbins presented the board of directors with the theme ideas received into the chamber office.  The board was asked to review the theme ideas and they would be voted on next month. 

 

Appointment of Board of Directors Position Expiring December 31, 2007

Two chamber member names (John Schere, Pathway Bank & Deb Svoboda, Burwell Shurfine Food Center) were recommended for consideration for the term ending December 31, 2007.  A secret ballot vote was taken declaring Deb Svoboda with Burwell Shurfine Food Center as the chamber member that will fulfill the remainder of this position.

 

New Business

Direction on Doing Business with Chamber Members – Education On Policy Established April 3, 2006

The board of directors were reeducated on the policy established April 2, 2006 in regards to conducting business with chamber members, the policy reads “If a product or service can not be offered by an existing chamber member then proper procedure would be to conduct business with a local business member in the community and then to do business outside the community”.  No changes in the policy were addressed.

 

Membership to the Garfield County Historical Society

Motion made by Pinckney, seconded by Fischer for the Burwell Chamber of Commerce to become a member of the Garfield County Historical Society.  Motion carried.

 

Fox Hunter’s Celebration

Franzen presented the board of directors with an update to the Fox Hunter’s Celebration to be held on October 5th, 6th & 7th

 

43rd Army Band – Monday, July 6th

Franzen informed the Board of Directors about sponsoring the 43rd Army Band performance on Monday, July 6th.  The Board of Directors agreed that they would sponsor the 43rd Army Band performance on Monday, July 6th.  Sponsoring the performance includes helping with advertisement for the event, ensuring access to 40 amps of electricity and accessibility to 50 chairs for the performers.

 

Highway 11 Welcome Banners

Gaukel presented the board of directors with the idea of helping to raise money for Welcome Banners to Burwell and brackets to be placed along Highway 11.  The Board of Directors thought this would be a good idea for donations at the community barbeque to go for.  The Board of Directors will continue to pursue this idea.

 

Spring Community-Wide Clean-up

The Board of Directors agreed to promote a Spring Community-Wide Clean-Up in conjunction with the Loup Basin RC&D Household Hazardous Waste Collection.

 

Proactive Response to FSA Consolidation Announcement

Franzen informed the Board of Directors that she will prepare a letter from the Burwell Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors in response to the FSA Consolidation.
